Proper preparation, such as winterizing your home and vehicle, can save lives. Winter is also peak season for respiratory illnesses like the flu, RSV, and the common cold, which can lead to higher hospitalizations. The simultaneous spread of multiple viruses can strain healthcare systems, making it important to take precautions to stay healthy during the colder months. This month’s newsletter will dive into preparedness considerations related to the winter season.

Technology has become an integrated component of society– from everyday computer usage to our national security. The wide net that technology casts has resulted in an increase in cyber-attacks. Cyber-attacks are malicious attempts to access or damage a computer system and can result in loss of money, theft, personal information, and damage to your reputation and safety. It has become of critical importance that individuals, cooperations, healthcare systems and government entities have an awareness of the cyber threat landscape and means to protect against attacks. This is especially important on a national level as the government relies on cyber networks to provide national security, public safety, and economic stability. Health care organizations have also been targeted in recent cyber-attacks posing threats to patient safety. Cybersecurity initiatives and measures should be put in place to protect individuals and organizations.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, preparedness is a shared responsibility that spans from individuals in the community to the national level. The overarching goal is to foster a secure and resilient nation, equipped to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to, and recover from the threats and hazards that pose the greatest risk.

Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone immediately. Families can and do cope with disasters such as hurricanes by preparing in advance and working together as a team.

By working hand-in-hand with other emergency response partners and leveraging resources and expertise at the federal level, EMS plays a crucial role in safeguarding public health and safety during times of crisis.
